Behind the design with Rebekka Bay

Marimekko Creative Director Rebekka Bay shares her insights on the UNIQLO x Marimekko Fall/Winter 2024 collection.

What was the inspiration behind the collection?

Rebekka Bay: The Fall/Winter 2024 collection theme was inspired by the Nordic tradition of fall foraging. The collection celebrates autumnal moments of enjoying the diverse aesthetics of nature with friends, family and loved ones from morning mist to darkening evenings.

This marks the third installment of the limited-edition UNIQLO x Marimekko collaboration collections for 2024. How is this collection different from the previous ones of the year?

RB: For the entire year, we have celebrated the overarching idea of enjoying time in nature and making the most of each season. We started the year with the “New Year 2024” collection, which was all about staying warm while enjoying winter outdoor activities. The Spring/Summer 2024 “Joyful Picnic” collection celebrated easy summer living and those joyful days outdoors with loved ones. Now, for the third “Fall/Winter 2024” installment, we wanted to highlight the calmness of the autumnal mood and moments of serenity that one can find when spending time in nature.

Kimalainen, 1968

Kimalainen (bumblebee) by Maija Isola is an exuberant stylised floral pattern that evokes the atmosphere of Slavic folk tales.

Seireeni, 1964

While traveling in Greece in the early 1960s, Maija Isola got inspired by the movement of water and depicted it in several fabric prints, including Seireeni (siren) from 1964. Named after the mythological sirens, the pattern also recalls the enchanting singing that lured sailors into dangerous waters.

Tell us about the color palette of the collection.

RB: The color palette follows the seasons' mood in nature, from rising sun to sunset. The beautiful shade of pale orange demonstrates the soft morning sun, whereas the mesmerizing bright orange mimics that last bright glimpse of sunlight just before sunset. Combined with deep midnight blue and hues of black and gray, it reflects the mystical mood of the autumn forest during the darkening evenings, which to me, capture the mood of the season perfectly.

What are your favorite pieces from the collection?

RB: To me, the entire collection offers the perfect example of functional layering for fall. If I had to name a personal favorite, it would be the unisex drawstring shoulder bag, which is the perfect everyday bag that we feature as part of our limited-edition collection for the first time.

Koppelo pattern

Koppelo, 1961

In 1961, Maija Isola spent many evenings and nights working in Marimekko’s print factory – painting in gentle, sweeping brushstrokes to the sway of music. Meter upon meter of new patterns emerged. On one of those nights, Koppelo (hen capercaillie), a pattern of stylized natural forms, saw daylight.

Pikkusuomu pattern

Suomu, 1965

The expressive Suomu (fish scale) pattern is one of the many Marimekko classics created by Annika Rimala. Variety, distinctiveness and timelessness were characteristic features of her print design.
