Tucked away on a quiet road in Sicilian countryside, CASA LAWA stands out like a defiant burst of color amid the mountains—an oasis crafted by founder and creative director Lukas Lewandowski. This 400-square-meter retreat beckons artists and creatives from around the world, drawn to its welcoming warmth and the lively gatherings Lukas hosts at its heart.

If anyone knows how to create a joyful, extravagant holiday feast, it’s Lukas. Luckily for us, he agreed to share some of his secrets.

Can you share a favorite holiday party memory? Are there any traditions at Casa Lawa you love to revisit each year?

Lukas Lewandowski: I love preparations and shaking martinis while getting the menu ready. I love cracking the walnuts gathered from our orchard right by the fireplace. It’s such a cozy and satisfying tradition! We often use them to make frangipane or sprinkle them on pizza.

During the winter months, we enjoy firing up our pizza oven and inviting our pizzaiolo, Antonio, to create delicious pizzas. Just last week, we got some lemon wood, which is the best for making pizza. The aroma and flavor it adds to the pizzas are incredible! It’s these little things that make the season feel so special.

Where do you most often find inspiration?

LL: People are my biggest inspiration, and my latest muse comes from those I interact with at CASA LAWA—my guests, residents, and employees. I've always been curious, absorbing the world around me by making notes, taking pictures, and simply talking to people. Everyone carries something inspiring to share, whether it’s a guest revealing their travel stories, a resident cooking a new dish, or an employee bringing fresh ideas to the table.

What’s your approach to creating the perfect party atmosphere?

LL: My go-to approach for creating the perfect party atmosphere with friends revolves around three elements: letting people help in the kitchen, handing them a drink and setting the right music. Simplicity and effortlessness are key—the simpler the food, the more time you have to spend with your loved ones

Do you have any tips for setting a dinner table that feels festive and creative?

LL: Embrace colors and patterns without hesitation. Mix and match vibrant tableware, napkins, and centerpieces to create a lively atmosphere. Incorporate seasonal veggies or fruits as part of your decor—arranging colorful peppers, cherry tomatoes, or herb bouquets not only adds beauty but can be enjoyed the next day. Add silver trays to elevate your presentation, whether for appetizers, desserts, or salt-crust baked fish. Use soft, warm lighting and candles to create a cozy ambiance. A good playlist is important, too.

How do you incorporate seasonal elements into your table setting? Any Marimekko favorites this holiday season?

LL: I recently hosted a dinner that felt incredibly festive, featuring Marimekko’s matching aprons, mugs and plates. We served delicious sweet treats, like freshly baked cookies, alongside chamomile tea. The coordinated Unikko prints created such a beautiful aesthetic, and seeing it all come together made me so happy. Beautiful design can truly elevate a simple moment, making it feel like Christmas all year long.
