Can I make products of Marimekko fabrics or prints and sell them?
Marimekko patterns are unique works of art created by artists from different fields, which are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. The Marimekko mark is also protected. Additionally, the protection covers the reputation associated with the patterns and the mark. That is why it is not permitted to use the Marimekko patterns or mark commercially, which means manufacturing products for commercial purposes. Commercial purposes refer to activities that are aimed at obtaining economic benefit. It is, of course, possible to make handicrafts and products for oneself or as gifts.
Can Marimekko fabrics or patterns be used to make craft instructions?
Since Marimekko patterns are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights, manufacturing or distributing craft instructions that contain an image/video of Marimekko’s fabric or pattern is not permitted. Such instructions may be, for example, a knitting instruction showing or explaining how to make a sweater with Marimekko’s pattern, or instructions on how to make a keychain with an image using Marimekko’s fabric. Of course, photos of crafts made for yourself or as a gift can be shared as inspiration to others.
